6-27-18 New Hawaii Lava Flow Images

Aloha,

I’m finally caught up on editing down my photos from all the helicopter tours I’ve done recently.

They’re in galleries noted by the date. To know what camera was used for an image, it’s the last part of the image name. Either D800 for the Nikon or GH5 for the Panasonic. It’s also noted in the image descriptions.

I’ve also added numerous new Fine Art images. This time I did something new. I gave two series of images their own galleries. This was done because each had so many great shots that are similar but, subtly different enough that it became difficult to narrow them down to just one or two. I’ll let you do that if and when ordering prints or publishing.

Volcano 565A – 565Lc. A series of shots from my Nikon D800 and the Nikon 180mm 2.8. Available in both standard and panoramic sizing.

Volcano 566Ac – 566Nc. A series of shots from my Nikon D800 and the Nikon 16mm 2.8 shot in both FX (16mm) and DX (24mm) modes. Available in both standard and panoramic sizing.

Also, a new sizing ratio has been added to accommodate the Panasonic GH5 shooting at a 4:3 ratio vs my usual 3:2. When I’m shooting I see the 3:2 but, it saves a larger scene. On some, I decided to offer the full uncropped version along with the cropped. These are only available on metal sized from 9 x 12 to 45 x 60. For an example visit image 564 and click “Buy Now“.

Image 564 also has the standard options 8 x 12 to 40 x 60 on metal and the Metallic paper option from 8 x 12 (11 x 14 mat) to 30 x 45. 564c and 564cv. 564cv is one of my favorites from this eruption.

One unique image captured during one of the flights is the large lavafall pouring into what was once Green Lake. The huge flow managed to get inside of Kapoho Crater evaporating the 400-year-old lake in less than 2 hours time. Once the steam cleared a large lavafall appeared ever so briefly the morning of my flight. There was thick smoke over the crater coming from the flows front as it roared through Kapoho and Vacation Land so, sightings were short-lived. It was estimated at 50′ high. Image 567c.

Even though this large eruption has destroyed nearly everything we all knew of Kapoho it is developing an entirely new area of land with possible black sand beaches and new tide pools for future generations.

No, I don’t have any images from the ground in the residential areas. I have my reasons why I chose not to go at this time. Maybe someday I’ll share them if and when it’s appropriate.

Some final notes.

Civil Defense and every other agency you can think of has their hands full so, please stay away from the eruption area and view from either the air or boat tours. As the eruption grows and intensifies the area becomes even more dangerous. New breakouts will be faster and more widespread. The chances of getting trapped or worse are very real.

Also, don’t believe everything you hear on Facebook. If you want exact and real updates visit the USGS-HVO update website and or Hawaii County Civil Defense. You can also follow my twitter feed as I get my information from these sources.

Don’t be afraid to visit the island. This is only affecting a very small region in comparison to the size of The Big Island. About 1+% of the islands total acreage.

This event is affecting the entire islands economy. Not just those who have lost homes etc… If you want to help, be sure and donate to reputable organizations only and visit the island. Tourism is our economy.

Fine art Prints of my work are available at Pacific Fine Art in Kailua Kona, 75-5744 Ali’i Drive Hawaii at the Kona Inn Shopping Village. 808-329-5009
