Volcano, Wasp & Gecko Videos and Photos

Aloha,

I’ve been busy shooting a variety of subjects. It seems to be never-ending so I post infrequently.

First are two videos from the new public viewing area in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. I have both short and full versions.

From this vantage point, you can see the far western portion of the lava lake at Halemaumau. As luck would have it that’s where the erupting vent is currently located. This small portion fills about 1/4 of the larger vent. The other part has been inactive lately. The current eruption so far has filled in about 265′. Once it reaches the next level of the caldera it will spread over a large area unless there’s another collapse before then.

For those of you that are interested I’ll have additional videos and photos from this location in the coming weeks.

The other videos were captured right on my lanai.

A small wasp nest that slowly grew in population only to later be decimated by a very hungry and aggressive Gecko.

The Paper Wasps were actually pretty docile and never bothered me. One day I took notice of the Gecko closing in on the nest and I was surprised to see it snatch a wasp and run off with it. This took numerous failed attempts as the main wasp would fight it off. Eventually, the gecko wiped out all but 2 of the juveniles. It even ate the ones still incubating within the nest. I caught that on video.

This all played out over several weeks and it was difficult catching the action as it happened quickly.

Lots of similar images from the eruption because so many had unique and interesting features.

The summit eruption at Kilauea volcano has been erupting on and off since late Sept. Beautiful clear skies are back on the Kona side of the island when it pauses.

11-22-20 New Videos

Aloha,

New videos and news about upcoming videos.

I’ve been shooting all kinds of new photos but, with all of the hiking and video editing, I’m way behind on processing them. I’ll do a new blog post when they’re uploaded for viewing.

New videos on my YouTube channel

I have the videos listed further down for easy viewing.

All are in 4k so be sure and set your YouTube settings for the highest quality.

The first one is hiking to Kiholo Bay fishponds from the north side crossing over an ancient lava flow and a relatively new one from 1859. It’s a long video but you can easily skip ahead at any time. In the future, long videos will load simultaneously with an 8-10 minute highlighted short version.

The second one you’re cruising along with me in my vehicle. I travel the entire length of Ali’i Drive here in Kailua Kona, Hawaii.

The drive starts at what’s known locally as The End Of The World. It’s where Ali’i Drive used to end before the bypass was built. I show how quiet Kona is still after all of these months of restrictions. While there are some tourists returning, what many are seeing is most businesses in town remain closed or are simply gone. No fancy music. Just everything I heard along the way.

The third video is from Old Airport State Park’s walking path. The south end Japanese Gardens cactus area. You go on a 30-minute walk through the garden on a nice quiet morning.

The fourth is a short video showing a Mudder Wasp building a nest on my lanai. They are everywhere where I live and they build these nests on nearly anything. They’re pretty docile so it’s not like you’re constantly getting attacked by them.

I used the GoPro Hero 8 Black and a polarizer filter. Also, the ZLMC Foam Windscreen and my Panasonic GH5 for the videos. The description of each video gives much more details.

Upcoming blog posts

The continuation of my Hikeumentary series of videos from many of my favorite hikes. This series subject matter will be a 5-8 part Hikeumentary. The first three are completed. This is a monumental effort that started in March. I have 2 or 3 more hikes to complete it if everything goes as planned. Usually, nothing goes as planned 🙂 Part four was an 11-hour ordeal that I edited down to 3 parts.

During all parts, you’ll experience the areas as if you were hiking it.

You also get to see the numerous struggles that one encounters during such an adventure. The first 4 parts involved over 36 hours of hiking.

Filming part 4 was the worst yet as I expected. 7 of the 11 hours were spent underground. In that amount of time, stuff will go wrong and it did but overall it went well considering.

It’s a dangerous area that I know extremely well and I’m prepared for most anything but I didn’t escape without a few injuries. Two were significant with one still being an issue 6 weeks later.

The first 4 were filmed with my GoPro Hero 7. The last two will be with my Hero 8 as my GP 7 went for a swim and never returned.

I still have 12 of the 14 cameras I’ve ever owned since the 1970s. One was stolen and now the lost GoPro Hero 7 Black.

The volcano stopped two years ago and it could be several more years before it gets going again. I have tons of other videos I’ve been wanting to make so, now I can get busy on them.

Thanks for subscribing.

No warnings as there’s no flowing lava anywhere on the island. The Kona side has the clearest and most beautiful skies anyone can remember seeing. Be sure you have good sunglasses and reef safe non-aerosol fragrance-free sunscreen. The best I have ever used.

Metal Surfboard Prints – New Videos

Aloha,

Metal Surfboard Prints

I was planning on introducing these back in March but we all know what started happening back then so I decided to wait until things got back to normal but we all know how that’s going.

So, seeing that Hawaii’s economy could possibly be shut down until sometime next year there’s no time like the present.

Many of my images can be printed on a metal surfboard shape in two different sizes. Below are a few samples along with the gallery links.

These are also available to anyone that I’ve taken pictures of while surfing.

They can be oriented up, down, right, or left.

New Banyans Galleries

I’m often down at the ocean well before morning twilight. Many times there are great photo opportunities. I’ve added new galleries of prints that are available at the links below.

Photos in these galleries were shot with my Panasonic GH5 and a variety of lenses covering 8mm – 400mm (16mm – 800mm 35mm equivalent).

New videos on my YouTube channel

Urban wildlife videos captured in my yard during the lockdown doldrums. They are of a few mongoose families foraging for food and feasting on the 100’s of falling mangos. They were also fed foods like expired eggs. They love eggs.

There are some random geckos, wasps, birds, and spiders.

I used the GoPro Hero 7 Black and a polarizer filter. Also, the ZLMC Foam Windscreen and my Panasonic GH5 for videos from my 2nd-floor lanai.

Upcoming blog posts

They will include a new logo that I thought of and had a friend draw for me more than 10 years ago. Also the continuation of my Hikeumentary series of videos from many of my favorite hikes. This series’ subject matter will be a five-part hike documentary. The first three are completed. This is a monumental effort that started in March. I have 3 or 4 more hikes to complete it if everything goes as planned. Usually, nothing goes as planned 🙂 Part three was a 7-hour ordeal that I edited down to 2 hours and 33 minutes.

During all parts, you’ll experience the areas as if you were hiking it.

You also get to see the numerous struggles that one encounters during such an adventure. The first 3 parts involved over 25 hours of hiking.

Filming part 3 was absolutely brutal. Parts 4 and 5 will be even worse. The videos are quite long. 2+ hours so I commend anyone who watches them in full.

It’s a dangerous area that I know extremely well.

The first 3 were filmed with my GoPro Hero 7. The last two will be with a newer version as my GP 7 recently went for a swim and never returned.

I still have 12 of the 14 cameras I’ve ever owned since the 1970s. One was stolen and now the lost GoPro Hero 7 Black.

Surfboard Metal Print Samples

I’ll be continually adding new ones.
