6-27-18 New Hawaii Lava Flow Images

Aloha,

I’m finally caught up on editing down my photos from all the helicopter tours I’ve done recently.

They’re in galleries noted by the date. To know what camera was used for an image, it’s the last part of the image name. Either D800 for the Nikon or GH5 for the Panasonic. It’s also noted in the image descriptions.

5 – 31 – 18 Leilani Eruption Helicopter Tour

6 – 03 – 18 Leilani Eruption Helicopter Tour

6 – 07 – 18 Leilani Eruption Helicopter Tour

I’ve also added numerous new Fine Art images. This time I did something new. I gave two series of images their own galleries. This was done because each had so many great shots that are similar but, subtly different enough that it became difficult to narrow them down to just one or two. I’ll let you do that if and when ordering prints or publishing.

Volcano 565A – 565Lc. A series of shots from my Nikon D800 and the Nikon 180mm 2.8. Available in both standard and panoramic sizing.

Volcano 566Ac – 566Nc. A series of shots from my Nikon D800 and the Nikon 16mm 2.8 shot in both FX (16mm) and DX (24mm) modes. Available in both standard and panoramic sizing.

Also, a new sizing ratio has been added to accommodate the Panasonic GH5 shooting at a 4:3 ratio vs my usual 3:2. When I’m shooting I see the 3:2 but, it saves a larger scene. On some, I decided to offer the full uncropped version along with the cropped. These are only available on metal sized from 9 x 12 to 45 x 60. For an example visit image 564 and click “Buy Now“.

Image 564 also has the standard options 8 x 12 to 40 x 60 on metal and the Metallic paper option from 8 x 12 (11 x 14 mat) to 30 x 45. 564c and 564cv. 564cv is one of my favorites from this eruption.

One unique image captured during one of the flights is the large lavafall pouring into what was once Green Lake. The huge flow managed to get inside of Kapoho Crater evaporating the 400-year-old lake in less than 2 hours time. Once the steam cleared a large lavafall appeared ever so briefly the morning of my flight. There was thick smoke over the crater coming from the flows front as it roared through Kapoho and Vacation Land so, sightings were short-lived. It was estimated at 50′ high. Image 567c.

Even though this large eruption has destroyed nearly everything we all knew of Kapoho it is developing an entirely new area of land with possible black sand beaches and new tide pools for future generations.

No, I don’t have any images from the ground in the residential areas. I have my reasons why I chose not to go at this time. Maybe someday I’ll share them if and when it’s appropriate.

Some final notes.

Civil Defense and every other agency you can think of has their hands full so, please stay away from the eruption area and view from either the air or boat tours. As the eruption grows and intensifies the area becomes even more dangerous. New breakouts will be faster and more widespread. The chances of getting trapped or worse are very real.

Also, don’t believe everything you hear on Facebook. If you want exact and real updates visit the USGS-HVO update website and or Hawaii County Civil Defense. You can also follow my twitter feed as I get my information from these sources.

Don’t be afraid to visit the island. This is only affecting a very small region in comparison to the size of The Big Island. About 1+% of the islands total acreage.

This event is affecting the entire islands economy. Not just those who have lost homes etc… If you want to help, be sure and donate to reputable organizations only and visit the island. Tourism is our economy.

Fine art Prints of my work are available at Pacific Fine Art in Kailua Kona, 75-5744 Ali’i Drive Hawaii at the Kona Inn Shopping Village. 808-329-5009

5-31-18 Lava Videos From A Helicopter

Aloha,

I recently took another helicopter tour over the new eruption area in and around Leilani Estates. Fissure 8 has been shooting a continuous fountain up to 260′ into the air.

The huge flow from it at this writing is past 4 corners and moving into Kapoho. I’ll be doing another flight later today. I used 3 cameras. One was my trusty old Nikon D800 with a fixed 16 – 24mm lens for the wide shots and my newer Panasonic Lumix GH5 with the Lumix 35mm – 100mm (70mm – 200mm equivalent in a full frame system). The videos are from the GH5 shot in 4k and my GoPro Hero 5 was mounted to it shooting 1080p HD. The GoPro video is 44 minutes long and shows the entire tour other than some parts edited out because there wasn’t anything seen when I set that rig down to use the Nikon.

I haven’t edited my still images so, no gallery to view yet.

Below are the links to the previous flight’s galleries.

So its easy to know which camera shot what images I loaded two separate galleries.

5-19-18 Leilani Eruption Helicopter D800 (wide shots)

5-19-18 Leilani Eruption Helicopter GH5 (zoomed in shots)

Both galleries start with images shot earlier that morning from Hwy 137 in Kapoho.

Remember, both galleries have multiple pages.

No, I don’t have any images from the ground in the residential areas. I have my reasons why I chose not to go at this time. Maybe someday I’ll share them if and when it’s appropriate.

The eruption is a beautiful sight to see but, tragic too.

New Fine Art Images & New Video

Aloha,

I’ve added 3 new images to my volcano Fine Art galleries. All in the 500 – 599 gallery.

I’ve been waiting for a special image to take the number 500 and I finally found one. It was actually captured 5 years ago and somehow missed during editing. There are two others from then. The intricate detail in these images is amazing.

They are all close-ups of flowing pahoehoe lava. #500 has the most amazing colors and it compliments #488cvv. They’d display well together.

#500

#563

#563c

The new video is from the recent lava lake activity at Kilauea volcanoes Halemaumau summit eruption.

This is a short version I shot with my Panasonic Lumix GH5 and the Leica Lumix 100-400mm lens. It shoots at the equivalent of 200-800mm. It was extremely windy so, the sound you hear is from an older lava flow. The vent itself is 1.2 miles from the viewing area and with the strong winds, nothing could be heard from the vent. All were captured in 4k at 60 fps. A much longer full version will be posted soon. It might be up to an hour long as it shows several long period sequences of the lava lakes crustal overturning. I suggest reading the video’s caption for more information.

2-16-17 Lava Ocean Entry “Fire Hose”

Aloha,

New video of the explosive lava flow ocean entry at Kilauea volcano Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. Photos will follow at a later date.

Lava Fire Hose at the Kamokuna ocean entry. 61g lava flow.

There’s been a significant lava Fire Hose coming out of the sea cliff ever since the bench/delta collapsed New Years Eve. If you’ve been reading my warnings at the end of the descriptions, you know this comes as no surprise.

Said this in my previous video;
The sea cliff blocking the view of it is ready to fall soon. Later in the video after sunrise you can see the large cracks in it that run deep into the depths of the ocean.

It did collapse.

In this video you’ll see a dozen or more people at the cliffs edge. This coast line will continue to collapse. Don’t go where they are!!

The Fire Hose is estimated to be about 90′ high and several feet round.

Stay away from this sea cliff!!!!!

The people there are lucky to be alive. Nothing brave about being out there. Nothing great to see as the steam blocks their view. That area is set to collapse at any time. Not to mention the large hot rocks flying all over that could have killed them.

This isn’t one of those times when its safe to be at an ocean entry.
Stay in the clearly marked safe zone.

Thanks for subscribing and watching. Many more videos to come.
Be patient. What I do isn’t always easy.

My usual warning.
Do not attempt to do what I do.
I have 26 years of experience and I know what I’m doing out there.
So many things can go wrong for those who don’t understand or can’t recognize the dangers of a volcanic eruption.
Stay away and watch my videos instead.

Having said my usual warning, let me add that this flow is accessible via hikes of at least 8-9 miles round trip.
Expect large crowds of people. Be sure to carry at least 3 liters of water per person.

There’s a real nice surface flow nearing the coast too.

Always use extreme caution at the sea cliffs and never walk out onto new land as it could easily collapse into the ocean taking you with it.
As the bench grows the immediate sea cliff will be vulnerable to collapse also.
I highly recommend you watching this HVNP safety video on safety at ocean entries.

http://lavapix.com/#/page/lava-viewing-safety-video/

Also, its best not to breath if you find yourself engulfed in the steam plume. If you think you will be in it often, be sure to wear a respirator or at the very least cover your mouth and nose with a shirt or similar when breathing.

Prints from my adventures can be purchased on my website lavapix.com.
Or locally at Krazy About Kona in the Kona Inn Shopping Village, Kailua Kona, HI.

11-30-16 New Photos & Videos

Aloha,

I was quite busy visiting the lava flow for a while back in August and September and then of course catching up on editing both photographs and video captured during those outings. It was great being able to ride the mountain bike most of the way and even right up to the lava flows at times.

Every outing was fantastic as always. Even the one with several inches of rain and constant thunder and lightning while riding out there in the dark. I did use my Gopro to video that ride. Haven’t processed it yet but, when I do I’ll let you know. I was fortunate enough to be at the flows each time a new ocean entry was about to start. Well, I timed it that way of course  🙂

A few changes have been made to my website Fine Art galleries.

The number of images has grown quite a bit over the years so, now I have the Volcano Fine Art images broken down into multiple galleries.

1 – 99, 100 – 199, 200 – 299, 300 – 399, 400 – 499, & 500 – 599.

Newest images can always be found in the higher numbered galleries. Start with image #522 and work your way up to see the latest as of this post.

Another big change is the separation of lava Fine Art from non-volcanic images. When you hover over the Fine Art Galleries menu you’ll see the additional galleries listed below the volcano ones.

Sunrise & Sunset – No Lava, Hawaii Night Photos – No Lava,

Green Sands Beach Fine Art, Big Island Shaped Prints, Big Island of Hawaii Misc – No Lava,

etc… Remember, you can always do a keyword search for a Fine Art image by its number. General keyword searches need to use one of the keywords posted on the Keywords page. You can’t use any random keywords.

Images from my outings at the lava flows in August & September can be seen at these links. All images are available as prints or for licensing.

Aug 2016 Lava 61g & Sept 2016 Lava 61g.

Several new videos have been added to my YouTube channel since my last post. Both lava and non-lava. Start here and work your way back. New videos are added often so, best to subscribe to my YT channel for instant notification to new video uploads. Each video has a detailed description.

Christmas is coming up quickly so, if you’re thinking of ordering a print for a present, best to do so soon. I can’t give an exact cut off date due to the many variables with orders.

Thanks for subscribing and watching. Comments are always welcomed.

Many more photos & videos to come.
Be patient. What I do isn’t always easy.

My usual warning.
Do not attempt to do what I do.
I have 25 years of experience and I know what I’m doing out there.
So many things can go wrong for those who don’t understand or can’t recognize the dangers of a volcanic eruption.
Stay away and watch my videos instead.

If you’re able to hike 8-9 miles, go see this in person.
Stay away from the edge of the sea cliff. I know this area very well so, I also know where not to go which is the most important thing. Always be aware of what’s going on inland of you. Large breakouts can suddenly occur.

Prints from my adventures can be purchased on my website lavapix.com.
Or locally at Krazy About Kona in the Kona Inn Shopping Village, Kailua Kona, HI.
