“Fire & Ice”

Aloha,

Hard to believe that it’s been 18 years since I captured my Fire & Ice image. 2/19/2005.

Last year I decided to revisit the images I captured during that outing and I made a print of the original composure for Fire & Ice. I now have it displayed with my Fire & Ice print.

It was a different lens setup that would show the fountain/spattering lava dropping over and down the side of the East Pond Vent south cone. Then the cone on the south end of the vent stopped spattering switching to the farther away northern cone, so I had to make a quick lens change to capture it properly.

The full story can be read on my website. The story behind Fire & Ice.

So this original composure is now available for purchase. It compliments my Fire & Ice image as part of the story. It can be purchased at the link below. They were captured 6 minutes apart.

Two years ago while out filming the on and off again Kilauea volcano summit eruption I captured this surreal image of the Halemaumau glow and the snow-capped summit of the Mauna Loa volcano under the glow of the full moon. 1/28/2021 at 2:42 am.

It’s available in two formats. Standard and panoramic. Image #600 Image #600c.

Volcano, Wasp & Gecko Videos and Photos

Aloha,

I’ve been busy shooting a variety of subjects. It seems to be never-ending so I post infrequently.

First are two videos from the new public viewing area in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. I have both short and full versions.

From this vantage point, you can see the far western portion of the lava lake at Halemaumau. As luck would have it that’s where the erupting vent is currently located. This small portion fills about 1/4 of the larger vent. The other part has been inactive lately. The current eruption so far has filled in about 265′. Once it reaches the next level of the caldera it will spread over a large area unless there’s another collapse before then.

For those of you that are interested I’ll have additional videos and photos from this location in the coming weeks.

The other videos were captured right on my lanai.

A small wasp nest that slowly grew in population only to later be decimated by a very hungry and aggressive Gecko.

The Paper Wasps were actually pretty docile and never bothered me. One day I took notice of the Gecko closing in on the nest and I was surprised to see it snatch a wasp and run off with it. This took numerous failed attempts as the main wasp would fight it off. Eventually, the gecko wiped out all but 2 of the juveniles. It even ate the ones still incubating within the nest. I caught that on video.

This all played out over several weeks and it was difficult catching the action as it happened quickly.

10-22-18 Kilauea Volcano Summit

Aloha,

Soon after Hawaii Volcanoes National Park opened I went out for the first full moon at the summit. The usual damp and breezy trade winds were gone and the area had some very heavy southerly rains right up until I arrived. The rest of the night was still and unusually warm.

A huge steam cloud rose high above the Halemaumau vent. It would slowly burn off through the night and sunrise.

As sunrise began the moonset also started. The moon set behind Mauna Loa.

During a brief period, the lighting from both the moon and the sun evened out giving HDR-like images. The steam vanished quickly once the sun rose.

The open areas of the park offer incredible views of the summit’s new look. Stay in open areas. Numerous large cracks are scattered throughout the summit.

Jaggar Museum can be seen in several of the images.

All were captured with my Panasonic GH5 and various Leica lenses.

The closed section of Crater Rim Drive. Sunken and cracked up ahead. The setting full moon.

No warnings as there’s no flowing lava anywhere on the island. The Kona side has the clearest and most beautiful skies anyone can remember seeing. Be sure you have good sunglasses and reef safe non-aerosol fragrance-free sunscreen. The best I have ever used.

7-27-11 Pu’u O’o Vent

Aloha,

(A repeat of my usual warning)

I’ll start with my warning not to do what I do. I have most likely done this hike more than anyone and I know what I’m doing and where I’m going. It’s extremely easy for the inexperienced to get lost on this hike. Most who attempt it do get lost. There are very real dangers and one needs to recognize them. I can. The hike is usually shrouded in heavy fog with no visible markers. Please stay away for your own safety. Most of all, it’s just plain and simply difficult!! (Once again more people got lost and needed rescue trying to do this hike) I can’t stress enough to stay away from this area as its extremely dangerous for the inexperienced.

Once again I took on this difficult hike. Wanted to see how much the vent floor and perched lava lake had risen in the past month. It was a dramatic change as the source of pressure below the floor has lifted it nearly 100′. Lava from a source outside of the lake fed a small flow that filled both the Puka Nui and MLK vents and was filling the West Gap Pit vent while I was there. These flows were small and slowly meandered to a very desolate area to the southwest. It may have died out by now. This process could repeat its self over and over.  It was interesting to watch the occasional spatter drift from east to west deep in the center of the lava lake until it was forced under the west rim. The first 5 images in the gallery show an example of this process. At times I could both hear and feel the floor of Pu’u O’o being uplifted. The vents rim would shutter and shake from the strain and the sound of grinding rocks could easily be heard. There are new cameras in place offering great web cam views. To help address my heavy backpack issues I bought myself a nice new Gregory Baltoro 65 pack. It was great for long multi-day adventures like this. The pivoting waist belt and shoulder harnesses allowed for a great fit. I wore it for 3 straight hours (8 total) with about 60 lbs of gear and I was comfortable. My favorite feature other than comfort is the front panel loading option. Overall it was a great adventure that kicked my butt like always. I move at a fast pace while hiking with few stops if any at all. Stopping for beaks could make this hike 10 times worse.

Images can be viewed on my website. Gallery 7-27-11 Puu Oo

Congratulations and a big Mahalo to Pam & Rick from Oregon for being the first to purchase one of my Pu’u O’o perched lava lake panoramic images on metal, flush mounted on a black brushed aluminum frame. #357c
