June 2023 Eruption Videos & Galleries

Videos from my June 17, 2023, Hawaii Volcanoes National Park visit.

The lava fountain was about 145′ high to give you a scale of how big some of those flying lava chunks are. The eruption stopped a few days later.

This vantage point is right where the trade showers creep in from the east (our backs) and end. This means it can often be engulfed in a cloudy mist at any time of the day or night. You’re also near the edge of the collapse of the main caldera and its steaming cliffs. In other words, there can be misty rains, clouds, and or steam present as seen in this visit.

I shot with both of my Panasonic cameras. The GH5 with the Leica 100-400mm (200-800mm 35mm equivalent) for all of the close-up clips and the G9 with the Lumix 8-18mm (16-36mm 35mm equivalent), the 12-35mm (24-70mm equivalent) for all of the wide ones, and the 35-100mm (70-200mm equivalent).

New Lava Video & Gallery

Aloha,

I uploaded a new video to my YouTube channel of Kilauea volcano’s latest eruption.

It’s very long but you can scroll through or skip around as you wish. Or just let it play on your TV in the background during social gatherings. Businesses that have TVs can let it play through as there are no ads in the middle of the video.

There will be two more videos from this eruption. I only made two visits as the eruption didn’t last long.

Below the posted video I have the same information posted that you’ll see on my YT channel.

If you’re unable to view the video on YT via the video above click here.

The on and off again summit eruption at Kilauea volcano in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.

Yes, this video is very long. Skip around or set it and let it play in the background when you’re having social gatherings etc… For those of you not interested in the night activity, you can start at the 2:34:00 mark to watch from morning twilight through sunrise. At this point and time, you’ll notice the audio quiet down significantly. You will hear the occasional Nene fly by.

For licensing, be sure to contact Brave Bison as noted above.

In less than 24 hours it filled a 360-acre lava lake up to 33′ deep. There were 30′ high dome fountains and one prominent 100′ fountain during my visit. The vent that produced the initial eruption was letting out loud jetting sounds. Not very often, but easily the loudest sound coming out of the area.

After several seconds of the wide clips, I sped it up to show the directions the lava was swirling.

The true scale of these vents is dwarfed by the size of the Halemaumau vent and Kilaueas caldera. I was at two different locations that were both about 1.5 miles away. You’ll notice in the last hour or so things get much quieter. That can be due to multiple factors like a change in activity, the sound being projected in a different direction, and wind. The main background noise is from the cooling surface rocks pushing against each other.

I did edit out the constant helicopter noise that starts after sunrise. I know one is the USGS but after that who knows. The park really needs to address this as it went on for several hours. I hope they’re not doing heli tours. Nearly all of the visitors I spoke with found them annoying and wondered why it was allowed. The park and USGS could use drones with live feeds when needed.

If you’re wondering why I switch to show wider clips instead of constant close ones, I’m shooting with 2 cameras simultaneously. This is the combined footage. During the early close-up clips, you’ll notice heavy amounts of heat shimmer. this would come and go throughout my visit. It’s a 360 acres lava lake so it’s hot down there. I was out there for roughly 8 hours.

Enjoy. June 06, 2023

Two more long videos from this 12-day eruption and then I’ll be working backward catching up on previous eruptions including last year’s Mauna Loa eruption.

My part of Hawaii just got fiber internet so now I have fast upload speeds exceeding 500Mbps. The prior 23Mbps was a bottleneck in my production.

“Fire & Ice”

Aloha,

Hard to believe that it’s been 18 years since I captured my Fire & Ice image. 2/19/2005.

Last year I decided to revisit the images I captured during that outing and I made a print of the original composure for Fire & Ice. I now have it displayed with my Fire & Ice print.

It was a different lens setup that would show the fountain/spattering lava dropping over and down the side of the East Pond Vent south cone. Then the cone on the south end of the vent stopped spattering switching to the farther away northern cone, so I had to make a quick lens change to capture it properly.

The full story can be read on my website. The story behind Fire & Ice.

So this original composure is now available for purchase. It compliments my Fire & Ice image as part of the story. It can be purchased at the link below. They were captured 6 minutes apart.

Two years ago while out filming the on and off again Kilauea volcano summit eruption I captured this surreal image of the Halemaumau glow and the snow-capped summit of the Mauna Loa volcano under the glow of the full moon. 1/28/2021 at 2:42 am.

It’s available in two formats. Standard and panoramic. Image #600 Image #600c.

New Videos

Aloha,

Wow, I went the entire year of 2022 without a blog post.

That’s a first since I started this journey decades ago.

I’ve been plenty busy with the Kilauea eruptions and Mauna Loa’s 2-week eruption.

I’ll be playing catch-up in 2023. Below are several videos to keep you occupied.

Image gallery links are below each video.

For immediate notification on new videos, subscribe to my YouTube channel and click the Notifications button.

Another blog post will be coming shortly with some new images and galleries.

I recently added several new videos to my YouTube channel.

Hawaii Lava Tube Hiking H#4 Part 2 Of 3

Aloha,

H#4 Part 2 of 3.

In this video, I continue on from where part 1 ended at the large skylight. It covers the tube section right up to the point where I start my exit adventure in part 3.

Along the way, my gimbal loses its charge so the GoPro 8 is on its own. What that amounts to is some shakiness.

There’s an hour of time between parts 2 and 3 that isn’t recorded because I’m exploring the area already shown near the end of part 2. I had hoped to explore and film this one tube section along the way but I was running short on time and my left shoulder wasn’t doing so well. That only got worse as you’ll see in part 3 when it’s released.

This section is the most difficult one. I was underground for 7 hours.

I enter in the same location as H#3 but this time I head mauka (uphill).

The majority of what you need to know is in the video description. I rarely talk in these videos as the intent is for you to feel as though you’re the one hiking. If I tried to explain everything you see the video wouldn’t ever end and you’d tire of hearing my voice.

This section requires lots of crawling and climbing up and over large rock piles. The highest is roughly 30′ high. All of them are a bit unstable so it’s slow going. Part 1 takes me to the only skylight. There’s no way out there as it’s about 40′ high.

Everything started out fine but when you spend 7 hours underground in a difficult situation things will eventually go wrong. Those occur in parts 2 and 3. The good is I’m prepared mentally, physically, and gear-wise.

Like in the previous three sections, I edit out equipment-related issues like changing batteries, etc…

When lava tubes drain they leave behind numerous interesting features. They often have several layers to the system but, not all are accessible and many are dead ends.

I filmed this series in 2020 and I’ve yet to finish the final section because of the injuries I suffered in H#4. I’m hoping to get the last area this year if all goes well.

This time only a long version is available. I found that most viewers watched the longer versions by a 2 – 1 margin. You can always skip ahead if desired.

Images from these outings can be seen at the links below. The lava tube ones are from my Panasonic GH5.

Additional images will be added when I find the time. H#4 is older images from various years.
