“Fire & Ice”

Aloha,

Hard to believe that it’s been 18 years since I captured my Fire & Ice image. 2/19/2005.

Last year I decided to revisit the images I captured during that outing and I made a print of the original composure for Fire & Ice. I now have it displayed with my Fire & Ice print.

It was a different lens setup that would show the fountain/spattering lava dropping over and down the side of the East Pond Vent south cone. Then the cone on the south end of the vent stopped spattering switching to the farther away northern cone, so I had to make a quick lens change to capture it properly.

The full story can be read on my website. The story behind Fire & Ice.

So this original composure is now available for purchase. It compliments my Fire & Ice image as part of the story. It can be purchased at the link below. They were captured 6 minutes apart.

Two years ago while out filming the on and off again Kilauea volcano summit eruption I captured this surreal image of the Halemaumau glow and the snow-capped summit of the Mauna Loa volcano under the glow of the full moon. 1/28/2021 at 2:42 am.

It’s available in two formats. Standard and panoramic. Image #600 Image #600c.

Hawaii Lava Tube Hiking H#1 And The New Summit Eruption – Videos

Aloha,

I’ve made my first lava tube hiking video public.

It’s the first in a series of lava tube hiking videos. Each becomes more difficult as it moves along.

Injuries occur in the later sections.

The majority of what you need to know is in the video description. I rarely talk in these videos as the intent is for you to feel as though you’re the one hiking. If I tried to explain everything you see the video wouldn’t ever end and you’d tire of hearing my voice.

When lava tubes drain they leave behind numerous interesting features. They often have several layers to the system but, not all are accessible and many are dead ends.

I started filming this series in early 2020 and I’ve yet to finish the final section because, well, it’s 2020 a year to be remembered or forgotten depending on your personal experiences.

In later sections, my time underground becomes extensive as the tubes get longer and more challenging. One hike was 7 hours of underground hiking and 4 more hours above ground. That part will be broken into 3 or 4 videos.

I’m not giving away the location of these lava tubes so they stay clean and protected and also not to encourage others into a possibly dangerous area. I’m offering up the opportunity to see a fascinating underground world and I’m hoping this area gets protected in some way. Maybe become a state or national park. An extension of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park would be great. There’s no reason to ever build in this area. There’s plenty of vacant land in other parts of the island. So much can be learned from these old lava flow eruptions. Also, it’s an area that will erupt again.

I’m not young anymore (60) so I move along slowly so as not to fall and get hurt but, in the end, it happens sooner or later. Remember, I had both hips replaced back in 2018 and my back always hurts (I wonder why).

I offer two versions. A full one for those wanting to explore many of the interesting features and a short version for those of you who don’t need that experience.

I also have a couple of videos from Kilauea volcano’s new summit eruption. More to come. Stay tuned.

6-27-18 New Hawaii Lava Flow Images

Aloha,

I’m finally caught up on editing my photos from all the helicopter tours I’ve done recently.

They’re in galleries noted by the date. To know what camera was used for an image, it’s the last part of the image name. Either D800 for the Nikon or GH5 for the Panasonic. It’s also noted in the image descriptions.

5 – 31 – 18 Leilani Eruption Helicopter Tour

6 – 03 – 18 Leilani Eruption Helicopter Tour

6 – 07 – 18 Leilani Eruption Helicopter Tour

I’ve also added numerous new Fine Art images. This time I did something new. I gave two series of images in their own galleries. This was done because each had so many great shots that were similar but, subtly different enough that it became difficult to narrow them down to just one or two. I’ll let you do that if and when ordering prints or publishing.

Volcano 565A – 565Lc. A series of shots from my Nikon D800 and the Nikon 180mm 2.8. Available in both standard and panoramic sizing.

Volcano 566Ac – 566Nc. A series of shots from my Nikon D800 and the Nikon 16mm 2.8 shot in both FX (16mm) and DX (24mm) modes. Available in both standard and panoramic sizing.

Also, a new sizing ratio has been added to accommodate the Panasonic GH5 shooting at a 4:3 ratio vs my usual 3:2. When I’m shooting I see the 3:2 but, it saves a larger scene. On some, I decided to offer the full uncropped version along with the cropped. These are only available in metal sizes from 9 x 12 to 45 x 60. For example, visit image 564 and click “Buy Now“.

Image 564 also has the standard options 8 x 12 to 40 x 60 on metal and the Metallic paper option from 8 x 12 (11 x 14 mat) to 30 x 45. 564c and 564cv. 564cv is one of my favorites from this eruption.

One unique image captured during one of the flights is the large lavafall pouring into what was once Green Lake. The huge flow managed to get inside Kapoho Crater evaporating the 400-year-old lake in less than 2 hours. Once the steam cleared a large lavafall appeared ever so briefly the morning of my flight. There was thick smoke over the crater coming from the front of the flow as it roared through Kapoho and Vacation Land so, sightings were short-lived. It was estimated at 50′ high. Image 567c.

Even though this large eruption has destroyed nearly everything we all knew of Kapoho it is developing an entirely new area of land with possible black sand beaches and new tide pools for future generations.

No, I don’t have any images from the ground in the residential areas. I have my reasons why I chose not to go at this time. Maybe someday I’ll share them if and when it’s appropriate.

Some final notes.

Civil Defense and every other agency you can think of has their hands full so, please stay away from the eruption area and view from either the air or boat tours. As the eruption grows and intensifies the area becomes even more dangerous. New breakouts will be faster and more widespread. The chances of getting trapped or worse are very real.

Also, don’t believe everything you hear on Facebook. If you want exact and real updates visit the USGS-HVO update website and or Hawaii County Civil Defense. You can also follow my twitter feed as I get my information from these sources.

Don’t be afraid to visit the island. This is only affecting a very small region in comparison to the size of The Big Island. About 1+% of the island’s total acreage.

This event is affecting the entire island’s economy. Not just those who have lost homes etc… If you want to help, be sure and donate to reputable organizations only and visit the island. Tourism is our economy.

6-03-18 Lava Eruption Helicopter Tour

Aloha,

Another spectacular Paradise helicopter tour of the eruption area.

Two videos showing Kapoho mid-destruction.

Like last time my GoPro 5 was attached to the bottom of my Panasonic GH5 so when switching to my Nikon D800 the GoPro sits to the side.

On this outing the GoPro’s battery died before the tour was over but, it did catch the beautiful sunrise flight to the flow.

I concentrated on close-up video and photos of the fountain at fissure 8. It was spectacular.

For the closeup footage, I used my Nikon 180mm for the stills and the Leica Lumix 100 – 400mm (200 – 800mm). If you’ve ever shot out of a moving helicopter, you know how tricky this is without a gimbal/gyro. Also, you get what the conditions allow.

In both videos be sure to watch for the huge lavafall flowing into what used to be Green Lake. It looks small in the videos but, was estimated at 50′ high. Green Lake was evaporated in 3.5 hours as the floor had a small finger sneak into Kapoho crater in a bizarre way entering the lake. Just after 16 minutes in the GoPro video and about 30 seconds into the 4K video.

Amazingly the longer video of the flight is getting all the views. People are missing out on the closeup of the fountains spattering in the 4K video. Don’t be one of those people.

Be sure and read the descriptions for each video.

I haven’t edited my still images so, no gallery to view yet.

Below are the links to the previous flight’s galleries.

So it’s easy to know which camera shot what images I loaded in two separate galleries.

5-31-18 Lava Videos From A Helicopter

Aloha,

I recently took another helicopter tour over the new eruption area in and around Leilani Estates. Fissure 8 has been shooting a continuous fountain up to 260′ into the air.

The huge flow from it at this writing is past 4 corners and moving into Kapoho. I’ll be doing another flight later today. I used 3 cameras. One was my trusty old Nikon D800 with a fixed 16 – 24mm lens for the wide shots and my newer Panasonic Lumix GH5 with the Lumix 35mm – 100mm (70mm – 200mm equivalent in a full frame system). The videos are from the GH5 shot in 4k and my GoPro Hero 5 was mounted to it shooting 1080p HD. The GoPro video is 44 minutes long and shows the entire tour other than some parts edited out because there wasn’t anything seen when I set that rig down to use the Nikon.

5-19-18 Leilani Eruption From The Air

Aloha,

A week ago I took a helicopter tour over the new eruption area in and around Leilani Estates. The new clusters of fissures had just gotten very robust with more fluid lava flows and they were quickly headed to the ocean.

Of course, these images are already old in comparison to what the area looks like now but, they do show numerous interesting sights.

One is the lava bomb house where the guy had his lower leg shattered. It happened that day I believe. Holes can be seen in the roof and solar panels.

The others show when the one flow first started to disappear into the giant crack that opened up. It was still in thick trees and brush so it hadn’t been discovered yet.

Both of these images are shown below.

Since I was just riding along and not dictating what I needed/wanted to film I have limited images. I loaded 98% of what I shot even though they are in sequence and similar. Clouds block different houses in others so, I decided to load them all.

I used two cameras. One was my trusty old Nikon D800 with a fixed 24mm lens for the wide shots and my newer Panasonic Lumix GH5 with the Leica Lumix 100mm – 400mm (200mm – 800mm equivalent in a full frame system). Its amazing the images I was able to capture using such a long reach lens. Not having the option to hover in place I decided not to try video. The strong trades were also an issue. Next outing I’ll try the 70-200 2.8 for low light video. It will be much easier to maneuver.

So its easy to know which camera shot what images I loaded two separate galleries.

The image below shows the possible lava bomb house at fissure 17. Bottom right is the crack loud jetting sounds and steam were coming from. Not much lava. That’s a doors off Paradise Helicopter tour passing below us. I was on the same type of tour with Paradise. Look hard and you can see the large lava bombs/spatter in the yard and holes in the roof and solar panels. Also, a small lattice structure that was destroyed.

5-19-18

Below are the merged fissures 16 and 20. They’re sending two large rivers of lava towards the ocean. Note the lower right corner and the stand of dead or dying trees. That’s the large crack opening up and lava is starting to flow into it. Where it went no one knows.

5-19-18

In this image below you can clearly see the lava flowing into the crack as it opens much wider. Upper right corner.
