The Lost Kona Coast Hike

Aloha,

This is an area that’s close to home that I first visited way back in 1991.

I call it the Lost Kona Coast because it’s a beautiful untouched coastline that hides in plain sight.

Back in the 1990s, there was talk of building several large cruise ship ports in this area and having a road that would shuttle passengers to town. Thankfully that never happened mostly due to the bad economy here at the time.

This area should never be developed.

I edited out the hike to the coast and the hike back. Those would add another hour and 20 minutes.

The hike started out cloudy and a bit dark but, soon the sun started peeking through allowing for colorful conditions.

This is yet another addition to my new series of hiking videos. They will appear in my Hike-U-Mentaries playlist. If you’re staying at home due to the worldwide pandemic, go on a hike with me. No fancy editing or cool music. Just everything I heard while out there.

Wear headphones or watch in a quiet place to avoid distracting sounds and take in the peacefulness of the area. Taking distancing to the extreme.

I’ll be loading a relaxing ocean sounds video using edited-out clips from this hike. For those Serenity Now people 🙂

Why would I show an area I love to hike that I never see other people at? I’m hoping that it helps to preserve this location by becoming a park status of some kind.

The hike takes you by beautiful inland beaches and numerous small sea arches.

I caution anyone hiking anywhere along the coast to be aware of tides and ocean conditions like large swells etc… At the time of this hike the tide was low and the ocean extremely calm.

You’ll notice very large rounded boulders. They get moved around by large swells. Avoid these areas during such conditions. Stay inland by the sand. That’s the high tide large swell waterline.

This area remains relatively pristine and free of trash other than some random fisherman trash near the start. Please keep it that way.

I used the GoPro Hero 7 Black and a polarizer filter. Also, the ZLMC Foam Windscreen.

No enhancements.

I was also testing out my Shimoda Action X30 camera backpack. (Not sponsored) An excellent camera backpack. You’ll hear its shoulder harness squeaking some. It just needed some breaking in. https://www.shimodadesigns.com/actionx-30

The nice thing about watching videos is you can skip ahead and watch at any pace you want.

Photos in my website gallery were shot with my Panasonic GH5 and the Leica 8 – 18mm. Dual image stabilization. I’m really enjoying the micro four-thirds camera system. My entire kit weighs only 7.5 lbs covering 8mm – 400mm (16mm – 800mm 35mm equivalent).

I didn’t bring my tripod as it was cloudy at the start and I wasn’t expecting to take very many photos. The tripod would have been for slow shutter speed shots. I improvised for them as it cleared and ended up being a beautiful day.

The gallery can be seen here. https://lavapix.com/#/gallery/the-lost-kona-coast/bl-66733-5-20-dxo/

The volcano stopped months ago and it could be years before it gets going again. I have tons of other videos I’ve been wanting to make so, now I can get busy on them.

Thanks for subscribing.

No warnings other than social distancing as there’s no flowing lava anywhere on the island. The Kona side has the clearest and most beautiful skies anyone can remember seeing. Be sure you have good sunglasses and reef non-aerosol fragrance-free sunscreen. The best I have ever used.

Fine art metal prints of my work are available at Pacific Fine Art in Kailua Kona, 75-5744 Ali’i Drive Hawaii at the Kona Inn Shopping Village. 808-329-5009. Tell them you’d like the option to order larger sizes.

6-27-18 New Hawaii Lava Flow Images

Aloha,

I’m finally caught up on editing my photos from all the helicopter tours I’ve done recently.

They’re in galleries noted by the date. To know what camera was used for an image, it’s the last part of the image name. Either D800 for the Nikon or GH5 for the Panasonic. It’s also noted in the image descriptions.

5 – 31 – 18 Leilani Eruption Helicopter Tour

6 – 03 – 18 Leilani Eruption Helicopter Tour

6 – 07 – 18 Leilani Eruption Helicopter Tour

I’ve also added numerous new Fine Art images. This time I did something new. I gave two series of images in their own galleries. This was done because each had so many great shots that were similar but, subtly different enough that it became difficult to narrow them down to just one or two. I’ll let you do that if and when ordering prints or publishing.

Volcano 565A – 565Lc. A series of shots from my Nikon D800 and the Nikon 180mm 2.8. Available in both standard and panoramic sizing.

Volcano 566Ac – 566Nc. A series of shots from my Nikon D800 and the Nikon 16mm 2.8 shot in both FX (16mm) and DX (24mm) modes. Available in both standard and panoramic sizing.

Also, a new sizing ratio has been added to accommodate the Panasonic GH5 shooting at a 4:3 ratio vs my usual 3:2. When I’m shooting I see the 3:2 but, it saves a larger scene. On some, I decided to offer the full uncropped version along with the cropped. These are only available in metal sizes from 9 x 12 to 45 x 60. For example, visit image 564 and click “Buy Now“.

Image 564 also has the standard options 8 x 12 to 40 x 60 on metal and the Metallic paper option from 8 x 12 (11 x 14 mat) to 30 x 45. 564c and 564cv. 564cv is one of my favorites from this eruption.

One unique image captured during one of the flights is the large lavafall pouring into what was once Green Lake. The huge flow managed to get inside Kapoho Crater evaporating the 400-year-old lake in less than 2 hours. Once the steam cleared a large lavafall appeared ever so briefly the morning of my flight. There was thick smoke over the crater coming from the front of the flow as it roared through Kapoho and Vacation Land so, sightings were short-lived. It was estimated at 50′ high. Image 567c.

Even though this large eruption has destroyed nearly everything we all knew of Kapoho it is developing an entirely new area of land with possible black sand beaches and new tide pools for future generations.

No, I don’t have any images from the ground in the residential areas. I have my reasons why I chose not to go at this time. Maybe someday I’ll share them if and when it’s appropriate.

Some final notes.

Civil Defense and every other agency you can think of has their hands full so, please stay away from the eruption area and view from either the air or boat tours. As the eruption grows and intensifies the area becomes even more dangerous. New breakouts will be faster and more widespread. The chances of getting trapped or worse are very real.

Also, don’t believe everything you hear on Facebook. If you want exact and real updates visit the USGS-HVO update website and or Hawaii County Civil Defense. You can also follow my twitter feed as I get my information from these sources.

Don’t be afraid to visit the island. This is only affecting a very small region in comparison to the size of The Big Island. About 1+% of the island’s total acreage.

This event is affecting the entire island’s economy. Not just those who have lost homes etc… If you want to help, be sure and donate to reputable organizations only and visit the island. Tourism is our economy.

6-03-18 Lava Eruption Helicopter Tour

Aloha,

Another spectacular Paradise helicopter tour of the eruption area.

Two videos showing Kapoho mid-destruction.

Like last time my GoPro 5 was attached to the bottom of my Panasonic GH5 so when switching to my Nikon D800 the GoPro sits to the side.

On this outing the GoPro’s battery died before the tour was over but, it did catch the beautiful sunrise flight to the flow.

I concentrated on close-up video and photos of the fountain at fissure 8. It was spectacular.

For the closeup footage, I used my Nikon 180mm for the stills and the Leica Lumix 100 – 400mm (200 – 800mm). If you’ve ever shot out of a moving helicopter, you know how tricky this is without a gimbal/gyro. Also, you get what the conditions allow.

In both videos be sure to watch for the huge lavafall flowing into what used to be Green Lake. It looks small in the videos but, was estimated at 50′ high. Green Lake was evaporated in 3.5 hours as the floor had a small finger sneak into Kapoho crater in a bizarre way entering the lake. Just after 16 minutes in the GoPro video and about 30 seconds into the 4K video.

Amazingly the longer video of the flight is getting all the views. People are missing out on the closeup of the fountains spattering in the 4K video. Don’t be one of those people.

Be sure and read the descriptions for each video.

I haven’t edited my still images so, no gallery to view yet.

Below are the links to the previous flight’s galleries.

So it’s easy to know which camera shot what images I loaded in two separate galleries.

5-19-18 Leilani Eruption Helicopter D800 (wide shots)

5-19-18 Leilani Eruption Helicopter GH5 (zoomed-in shots)

Both galleries start with images shot earlier that morning from Hwy 137 in Kapoho.

Remember, both galleries have multiple pages.

No, I don’t have any images from the ground in the residential areas. I have my reasons why I chose not to go at this time. Maybe someday I’ll share them if and when it’s appropriate.

The eruption is a beautiful sight to see but, tragic too.

Panasonic Lumix GH5 Sample Photos

Aloha,

I’ve loaded numerous images from the GH5 to my website for viewing.

A miscellaneous gallery and images of the film crew I shot while being filmed for the Panasonic project back in Sept 2017. Both galleries have multiple pages. The film crew images let you see what I was looking at while being filmed. Just the opposite of what I usually see when out by myself.

Also loaded are surfing galleries. All images in those were shot with the Lumix 100 – 400mm which is the equivalent of 200 – 800mm. Super fast and sharp lens even at 800mm. Excellent silky smooth 4k video too. That will be in a future blog post.

To view the Surfing galleries, look to the far right on the header of my website.

Some images will be added to my Fine Art galleries in the near future.

All images on my website are available for licensing or as prints even if not marked.

Panasonic Lumix GH5 Film Project 2017

Aloha,

Back in September, I was the photographer in a promotional film project for the Panasonic Lumix GH5 camera system.

Of course, we ventured out to the lava flows.

It was three days of filming along with one night.

This was a large group and all did well on the long night hike to the lava flow. For most, it was their first experience at lava flows. The flow rewarded us all with two streams of lava at the base of the pali. They would spread out onto the flats near the base. The weather was also great until we started our trek back. Heavy cold rain moved in. That is perfect and much better than hiking back in the brutal Hawaii sun.

The GH5 is an incredible camera. The options for video are endless. Stunning 4K at 60 fps.

Met several great people who were involved in the project.

The film can be seen on one of these sites. 4 million views and counting. Short version YT Panasonic’s website Transitions Productions Youtube

My lava flow videos can be seen below or on my Youtube channel. The Youtube channel will have the description.

Part 1 and Part 2. Read the description and be sure to watch all at high res, full screen.

More video coming from the GH5 of surfing here on the Big Island of Hawaii.

Also, news about the new gallery I’ll be in here in Kailua Kona after Thanksgiving.

Feel free to leave comments if you have anything to say.

Keep it family friendly, please.
